Service and Mission Outreach

“ What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice,
love kindness and walk humbly with your God.” ~ Micah 6:8

We are being called to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors both locally and globally, as well as to care for and nurture the planet. We work for social and economic justice for all people in every part of the world. Our common mission is to carry out the love of Jesus Christ in word and deed. The Mission Committee meets on the second Monday of odd-numbered months at 7:30 p.m. and all are welcome to join us.

Meacham Park - St. Matthews - Joint Project
Since October 2011, members of Fist Pres have joined with members of St. Matthews CME church in Meacham Park to replace St. Matthew's sanctuary floor and perform additional repairs to the buliding. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Dick Smith at 314-822-5100 or send him an email by clicking here.

Room At the Inn
On the 2nd Saturday evening of each month we host up to ten homeless guests overnight at the church. Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve dinner and breakfast, to drive guests from and to the day site in Bridgeton, to act as hosts during the evening and to stay overnight at our church with the guests. Families with children are welcome to volunteer for this ministry. For more information, contact Emmett and Martha Kelble: ekaelble@charter.net.

Alternative Gift Market
On three Sundays in December the Micah 6 Committee sponsors the Alternative Gift Market. The market provides one-stop shopping for a wide variety of unique gifts and handicrafts that benefit local and international charities, helping to improve people's health and lift them out of poverty.

Habitat for Humanity
In 2010 First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood joined with four other area Presbyterian Churches to construct a home in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity.  Over sixty volunteers gave of their time and energy to participate in this meaningful ministry.  Working alongside the homeowners in the construction of their home is a greatly rewarding experience.

Make a Difference Month
Each year, eager volunteers gather to "Make a Difference" during the month of October. 2011 events included a coat drive for Joint Neighborhood Ministries, a church grounds clean-up, a hymn sing at Friendship Village South, "Rent-a-Kid" for light household chores and the CROP Walk.

Crop Walk
Each year in October we raise funds for and participate in Church World Service's CROP Walk in Tower Grove Park. CROP Walk supports our local food pantry as well as Church World Services and Operation Food Search.

The Bridge
Adult volunteers are needed to serve food at The Bridge at the Centenary United Methodist Church in St. Louis. The Bridge is a daily drop-in center for homeless individuals and families. A group from First Pres helps to serve lunch on the 4th Thursday of each month. At least four, preferably five volunteers are needed each month. We meet at the southwest corner of the Schnuck’s parking lot at Lindbergh Boulevard and Clayton Road at 10:30 and are usually back by 1:30. Volunteers help prepare the food, serve the people, and clean the tables. A lot of good is done in a short time! For more information, contact Kathy Smith (314-965-7898, KJSKWD@hotmail.com) or Linda Jarrett (636-394-4642, write4you@sbcglobal.net.)

Peacemaking Award
The congregation bestows this award on an individual or organization which honors our sense of being called to fulfill the invitation of Micah 6 to "do justice, love kindness and walk humbly."

Disaster Relief Mission Trips
A tornado relief mission trip to Joplin, MO has been scheduled for September 9-15, 2012; contact lizmccane@gmail.com for information. Sixteen adult members of First Pres worked with Habitat for Humanity in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from Feb. 26 - Mar. 3, 2012 to support Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) tornado recovery efforts (pictures below).

Bread for the World
A Lenten tradition at First Pres is to write letters to our elected officials on behalf of the Bread for the World Campaign Against Hunger. Letter writers of all ages gather in Fellowship Hall to advocate on behalf of the hungry around the world.

Stream Cleanup
The Earth Day Community Stream Clean-Up provides a great opportunity for volunteers of all ages to collect a surprising array of litter and debris from sections of Kirkwood's Sugar Creek. Recently, the Kirkwood City Council recognized this effort as an important contribution to the environmental health and safety of the community. Co-sponsors of this annual event are: the St. Louis Metropolitan Sewer District, the Open Space Council, and Environmental Operations, Inc.

Kirk Care
First Pres is proud to support Kirk Care, a non-profit Food and Financial Assistance Organization serving the community of Kirkwood.
